Associate Lecturer in Biological Basis of Behaviour at Birkbeck, University of London


An excellent opportunity for a current or aspiring lecturer to join the psychology teaching team on the Cert (HE) programme.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to join the collaborative and supportive teaching team on the Certificate of Higher Education and Foundation Year programmes. Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment the Biological Basis of Behaviour module, which is a Level 4 module offered as part of our Certificate of Higher Education.

The module offers an introduction to biological psychology, including neuropsychology, exploring the relationships between biology, behaviour and mental processes and associated methodologies.

The module is delivered on Monday afternoons.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • A degree in Psychology.
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.
  • A good understanding of the needs of part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.
  • Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
  • A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle.
  • Particularly able to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate.
  • Willing to engage in reflective practice.

Please note: candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree/s in a relevant area
  • A teaching qualification

The successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £61.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
